Swimming hall becomes a theater

Pyynikki swimming hall in Tampere was opened in 1956 and it has been under renovation since 2007. It is one of the oldest swimming halls in Finland. The swimming hall was designed by architect Harry W. Schreck, assisted by architects Olavi Suvitie and Taito Uusitalo. Once a beautiful example of Finnish 50's modernist architecture is now in a really, really shabby condition.

50's charm in its full glory. Oh joy! Absolutely fantastic details and finish (Photos courtesy of Arkkitehtitoimisto Harry W. Schreck).

Current decay of the swimming hall. Oh dear.

Unfortunately the renovation has been apparently been delayed for some time. But there are happy news! While waiting for complete makeover, the hall will be temporarily transformed into a theater venue in spring 2010 by Teatteri Siperia.

(Check out Yle's story about the project, too)

The play "Pää edellä" ("Head first", roughly translated) will be premiered on February 12th, 2010. The project includes also other functions, such as art exhibition, discussions and educational events. You may read more about the project from projects website or from Teatteri Siperia's website (in Finnish). Let's hope that activation of the swimming hall space will put some speed also to the renovation plans.

Posters, leaflets, ourtdoor advertising and other pr-material were created by Anssi from Werklig. You may check out older Teatteri Siperia stuff at our Work-section, too.

PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise – Color of the Year for 2010

Pantone Press release

Pantone LLC, an X-Rite company (NASDAQ: XRIT), and the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, today announced PANTONE® 15-5519 Turquoise, an inviting, luminous hue, as the color of the year for 2010.

Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.

“In many cultures, Turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of color,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.”

Whether envisioned as a tranquil ocean surrounding a tropical island or a protective stone warding off evil spirits, Turquoise is a color that most people respond to positively. It is universally flattering, has appeal for men and women, and translates easily to fashion and interiors. With both warm and cool undertones, Turquoise pairs nicely with any other color in the spectrum. Turquoise adds a splash of excitement to neutrals and browns, complements reds and pinks, creates a classic maritime look with deep blues, livens up all other greens, and is especially trend-setting with yellow-greens.

"...PANTONE WEDDING exclusively from Dessy provides a collection of color tools to make it easy for brides to achieve perfectly color-coordinated weddings – from inspiration to “I do.” "

Color of the year for 2010!

Surprise bag / Idea bag (via Åsa)

Östermalmstorg, exit Stureplan/Birger Jarlsgatan. Perfect location.

Policy-makers who are sitting on the financial and culture resources are hanging in the area. Of course, it's not the point to priorisize them, but maybe reaching them is not a bad idea. Works like an ad for them. Library ad.

Sture bibliotek is specialized in newly released most popular swedish and english books. Freshest books not yet even discovered by you. T-Sture's design drivers has been accessibility and infomality. En route library.

You are allow to carry your lattes and other take aways with you. Architects Thomas Eriksson and interior designer Cecilia Andersson took care of the spatial design and made this horse shoe shaped space work for you. Mirrors and easy chairs.

There is a media jukebox to download voice books, films, language courses or kids' games direct to your mp3 player or usb memory.

Always nice with places with no entrance fee in downtown!

This Subway Library is happening in Stockholm now. T-Sture opened its doors in May this year. City of Stockholm is taking the whole Library conceptual thinking to the new levels. This is just an one examle/result of their great brainstorming how to reach new library people, new target groups.

Quite opposite thinking dominates in Helsinki. -5 libraries.
