Heads or Tails?

I'm having the honor to exhibit my work in a group exhibition with the Finnish illustrators I admire the most: Jesse Auersalo, Laura Laine, Rami Niemi & Antti Uotila.

The theme for our exhibition was diptych which every illustrator could interpret freely. The whole idea for the exhibition was to create something which we don't normally get to do. We would be our own clients. It's a good way to show the audience a different side of our works. Usually you see them in magazines and in adverts.

My idea was to study how much you could do with just surfaces and lines. I wanted to create an abstract world with some theatrical feeling to it.

Alppila ♥

When Helsingin Sanomat (on last Friday 14.8.) asked newly rewarded producer Kari Korkman the “What next?”-question, the answer was the same as it has been for me and some other people for couple of years now: ALPPILA.

On weekends I watch people sleepy heading Valtteri fleamarket with their take-away coffees. That view together with typical Alppila redbrick architecture, low warehouses in area and tiny balconies in strict rows in our brick facade reminds me a bit of New York.

Oriental breathings from Meira Coffee roastery, Local basketball team Alppilan Koris AlKo, busy designers at Viipurinkatu 8 (Elina & Klaus Aalto, Saara Renvall) defines all respectively the local spirit. Writer/reviewer Kalle Kinnunen, Myymälä2 founder Jan Konsin, stylist Salli Raeste and graphic designers like Tuomas Tofferi and Elmo Sarpaniemi – locals as well – and familiar faces at Porvoonkadun Baari and Weeruska.

Anni Sinnemäki’s ‘Alppila’ poem from her latest anthology ‘Aleksis Kiven Katu’ beautifully chrystallizes the greatness of Alppila:

"OI ALPPILA,
Elämäni on ollut rauhallista täällä
Pasilan ja Linnanmäen välisessä laaksossa

Lumen peittämänä sunnuntaina
voisi kuvitella kävelevänsä
hiljaisen maaseutukaupungin katuja
kellot soittavat niille
jotka  asuvat yksiöissä

Kesällä raitiovaunussa
muualta tulleet ihmiset
ovat täynnä kysymyksiä sen reitistä
joka kumma kyllä on äärettömyys

Ihmisten huuto huvipuistossa
tulee sisään parvekkeiden kautta
kaupassa kuumatukkaiset lapset itkevät
haluavat lisää jäätelöä
vaikka voivat jo pahoin

Tapaan turkulaisen runoilijan kadunkulmassa
täällä viihtyvät turkulaiset runoilijat, koska

Aleksis Kiven katu on maailman
kaunein katu, leveä ja tyhjä
Nouseva aurinko valaisee
konepajan rakennusten tiilet
aamusella haettujen keskiolutpullojen
hohtavat ruskeat kyljet

Minä seison saattamassa sinua
pysäkillä kirkon takana
aikataulun mukaan
eroamme minuutin päästä

Vaan kun astut tuohon vaunuun
palaat takaisin vääjäämättä"

Flow Uniqueness!

Alongside great music, Flow is about urban spaces, visual arts, decoration, good food and drink. AND special attention is being paid to the ecological influences of event production via Carbon Footprint calculations.

2009 Flow Festival and the energy innovators at Pöyry have launched a project aimed at producing a festival event with fewer carbon emissions. The first step is to find out the carbon emissions caused by the energy spent at producing the festival and to pinpoint potential ways of reducing the emissions. The calculations include emissions due to the artists’ travelling to perform at Flow. The calculations are based on internationally accepted guidelines (Green House Gas Protocol).

In order to reduce plastic waste, Flow uses recycling-friendly cans and bottles with 1€ deposit at the festival site.

The Flow09 gourmet is curated by Antto Melasniemi of restaurants Atelje Finne and Kuurna. Taking part in the farreaching menu are restaurants Makutakuu, Raku Ya, Sanni Jouhki Café, Grotesk, Elokuvamuonitus Nakki Ltd and Nolla. The menu ranges from club sandwiches and sushi to a remarkably high-quality selection of coffees.

In addition to other bars, Flow will include the “Black Label Bar” designed by architect agency Juhana Heikonen and built by Bergen Ltd. The bar serves a selection high-class champagne to suit even the most demanding festival-goer, and the interior is designed by the highly-respect Finnish designer Harri Koskinen. The multifaceted Flow Festival area is decorated in co-operated with Marimekko and Brand Factory.

Already last year, my blogging and foreigner friends thought that there is no such festival like Flow. Anywhere. Globally unique. True apple of Helsinkians eye. Thank you.

2008 highlights: Kuurna fine dining (in the picture), no plastic pints, Super delicious Kaffe Centralen's coffees, Artek furnitures. Totally unique vibe!

Bantora

"Bantora is the place for connecting like-minded people in the coder / developer / planner community and making events happen."

Werklig created visual identity and thematic concept for Bantora, an online event-organizing service. Bantora identity consists of logo, typography and colour specifications and graphic elements. The concept for visual identity was "playground", meaning basic shapes, forms and colours that could be used in a varied way. Check out Bantora website for more information!

Online execution was made by nice people at Luxus.
